Just in time for the Fourth of July! The Hubble Space Telescope recently captured a celestial firework show that puts the fireworks we have on Earth to shame.
A photo released by NASA on Tuesday shows a firestorm of star birth in a small galaxy 82 million light-years away.
The galaxy, dubbed Kiso 5639, is shaped like a disc, but looks more like a skyrocket because it is tilted and the galaxy's star-forming head has a red glow, NASA said in a statement.
According to NASA, researchers believe the intense star birth was caused by intergalactic gas raining on one end of the galaxy.
And while beautiful, the celestial firework show also gives astronomers a glimpse into the earth universe, Debra Elmegreen of Vassar College, said in a statement.
“The current thinking is that galaxies in the early universe grow from accreting gas from the surrounding neighborhood,” Elmegreen said. “It’s a stage that galaxies, including our Milky Way, must go through as they are growing up.”
